چکیده

ERCIM News No. 53 April 2003 33 Thanks to recent technological advances, there are now many potential applications for robotics including multi-agent systems. The aim of the RoboCare project is to study issues and challenges involved in the design of systems for the care of the elderly that adopt both fixed and mobile heterogeneous agents. These agents can be robots, intelligent sensors or possibly even humans. RoboCare shares some aspects with other projects for the assistance of elderly people, such as Pearle, the mobile robotic assistant for the elderly (M. Pollack et. al.) and the Assisted Cognition Project (H. Kautz et. al.), but addresses the particular goal of creating a heterogeneous multi-agent environment for generating user services.

Editorial: the evolving partnership between cognitive science and HCI

The theme of this special issue is ‘‘The Role of Cognitive Science in Human – Computer Interaction’’ (HCI) . A generally accepted definition states that the main goal of HCI is to advance the design , implementation , and use of interactive computing systems by human beings (ACM , SIGCHI , 1992) . Since the current primary use of computers is as tools for acting on and for observing the (inform...

Cognitive Techniques for Ultrawideband Communications

Cognitive radio is an emerging wireless technology that allows dynamic system reconfiguration, promising dramatic improvements in spectrum utilisation. Unlicensed spectrum sharing is the theme that binds cognitive radio and ultrawideband technologies. This paper presents an assessment of cognitive techniques for ultrawideband systems, highlighting the characteristics of this highly flexible, sp...

Special Issue on Cybernetics and Cognitive Informatics

—The three greatest theories in science and engineering developed in the 1940s are cybernetics, information theory, and systems theory. Cybernetics is the science of communication and control in humans, machines, organizations, and societies across the reductive hierarchy of neural, cognitive, functional, and logical levels. A contemporary form of cybernetics, known as cognitive informatics (CI...

What Is a Cognitive System

The theme for this year’s symposium, The Airspace as a Cognitive System, stimulates the questions; what is a Cognitive System and in what sense can we characterize the airspace as a cognitive system? I discuss these questions by reviewing ideas promoted in discussions of distributed cognition. I also contrast the concept of distributed with the similar concepts of shared and joint as they are d...
